Introduction The Catholic Church is unique in comparison to Protestant branches of Christianity because of the tradition, formality, and leadership. Leaders in the Catholic church such as Priests, Nuns, Bishops and Popes vow to remain celibate and follow a marriage with God and the Church rather than a spouse. It is interesting to discover whether celibacy has any impact on oneââ¬â¢s psychosexual development and on an individualââ¬â¢s efficiency as a church leader. Description and origin of celibacy Celibacy can be defined as ââ¬Å"popularly understood, is the state of non-marriage and/or the abstinence from sexual activity. According to Catholicism, human sexuality is primarily used as a means of procreation and is able to be reach its ultimate growth within a marriage (McGavin, 2011, p. 3). Thus, choosing a celibate lifestyle can be seen as fulfilling a religious calling in a vocational sense. chosen and stable celibacy is spoken of in ââ¬Å"vocationalâ⬠terms, as answering a religious calling (McGavin, 2011, p. 3). Celibacy can be seen as a consummation of th e religious sacrament of marriage because it redirects sexuality to a religious purpose and embodies a healthy lifestyle for the culture and management of the body (McGavin, 2011, p. 3).
